The Township is mandated by State Law to administer the General Assistance program, for individuals in need, who meet certain eligibility requirements. The term came out of the Social Security Act of 1935, stating that if a person does not fit into categories administrated by Social Security or Department of Human Services, they fell into a " general" category.
The East St. Louis Township provides services that are tailored to the needs of the citizens we serve, i.e., the underprivileged, disadvantaged, uneducated, chemically dependent, victim and perpetrator of crimes, mentally and physically challenged, homeless, and the elderly.
To keep the tax burden down, the Township actively pursues alternative funding to increase and improve the services provided to our citizens.
